Korean Indie Bands Head To UK & Liverpool

Following in the footsteps of last year’s Korea Rocks tour in the UK, no less than six Korean acts are set to appear at the Liverpool Sound City Festival next week, May 1st-3rd. All bands will have multiple showcases at the festival and play elsewhere in the country before returning to Korea.

Hugh Keice performed at the festival already in 2012 and will be returning together with Peterpan Complex. Asian Chairshot

Psychedelic rock trio Asian Chairshot formed in 2011 and has gained more traction every year since. Last year’s EP helped the band to place second in the Hello Rookie finals 2013 and earned them nominations for both Best Korean Rock Album and Best Korean Rock Song at the 2014 Korean Music Awards. Asian Chairshot’s first full-length album Horizon is slated for release end of May.

After neglecting opportunities to see them live in Korea last summer, I finally took the chance in March and was very, very impressed. This is for sure a band I think will go very well over with a European audience.

Dead Buttons

While starting out as a threepiece in 2012, Dead Buttons transformed into a guitar-drums duo during the summer of 2013. Debut EP Whoever You Are was released in February this year and has generated a fair amount of buzz for the rock’n’roll act since.

Hellivision

The members of instrumental rock trio Hellivision began jamming together during the summer of 2011. With a background in bands such as The Mustangs, Cocore, Underwears Band and Second Session the result is sometimes funky, sometimes reggae, often psychedelic, always intriguing.

The first time I saw Hellivision live was during now defunct venue Lowrise’s 1st anniversary show. Even though I’d been told that it was a band not to miss already months earlier, I wasn’t quite prepared for what I was about to hear when the band started improvising. Definitely a band to experience live.

Hugh Keice

London-based until recently, John Mayer influenced singer-songwriter Hugh Keice has moved back to Seoul but still returns to England now and then. In October last year first full-length album Whale Song Omnibus was released, mixing new songs with those previously released on EPs in the UK.

I had the pleasure of seeing Hugh Keice live in a small art space in London almost exactly a year ago. After the first few songs I often tend to find singer-songwriters to not be all that interesting live, but I had no such issues with Hugh Keice. Catch him if you can!

UK Dates

May 3 – Liverpool, England @ Sound Food and Drink (Liverpool Sound City)
May 6 – London, England @ Korean Cultural Centre UK

Patients

Although the members have varied over the years, punk band Patients has been around since 2005. First full-length album Kitsch Space came out in 2011 and was launched as ‘hybrid punk’. Nowadays the band is a trio with a bass-drums-keyboard setup.

Peterpan Complex

Peterpan Complex has been around for well over a decade already, with several changes in both sound and members throughout the years. After debuting with a Radiohead influenced sound in 2002 and trying out different modern rock styles since, the bands current incarnation has more of a synth-pop orientation. Peterpan Complex played a couple of shows in London in February this year.
