Modern Sky Helsinki 2015

For the first time ever, Chinese indie music festival Modern Sky is set to take place in Helsinki, Finland. Plenty of great artists from the Nordic countries as well as China and other parts of East Asia are scheduled to play at the Hietalahti shipyard from August 28-29. Coming over from Korea, Sunwoo Jung-A and Kuang Program will be playing the Friday whereas Neon Bunny will take to the stage on the Saturday. Check out Modern Sky Helsinki’s artist page for a list of all the artists that have been booked. Modern Sky also offers a YouTube playlist and a Spotify playlist if you want to listen in advance. I’m very excited for the festival myself, definitely going...

5 Finnish Acts to See at Modern Sky HKI...

In preparation for Modern Sky Helsinki I’ve been listening through exactly everything I could find from each artist on Spotify. Musicwise that was one of my best ideas so far this year as it has meant I got to know a whole lot of awesome artists that I was barely aware of, if at all, prior to June. Most of my new favorites hail from the host country of the festival itself, Finland. Here they are, in case you too are trying to figure out what to actually see at the festival or if you’re just interested in trying something new. Long-Sam Trimming my Modern Sky Helsinki Spotify playlist has been hard, but it seems my biggest challenge...

Randomness #32

Lots of things going on everywhere right now. Modern Sky Helsinki is coming up this weekend and with the time table out I*m getting all the more excited about it. If only there was more time–to see all the artists at the festival and to write about them beforehand–that’d be all I could ask. Recent Listening One of the posts I look forward to making the most every month are the Music Alliance Pact posts. A lot of great songs have been featured over the years and this month was certainly no exception. More than 2 weeks since the release Floating Island‘s “Parade” still pops up in my head. Extremely catchy. Not sure whether it’s the sound or...

Top Band 3: Expectations

End of July it was announced that KBS2 will start broadcasting Top Band 3–a new season if its band audition format premiered in 2011–his October. Application has been open for most of August and this week the band’s that will be called in for continued auditions should be announced. Since the Top Band 2 commentary series I’ve rounded up some of the old panel members to talk about our initial expectations: Sangha of Strange Seasons, Lightinthemind of Korean Rock is Real, Xtian of Korean Indie, and Youngmi.   Anna: I’m so excited that we finally get the third season of Top Band! I think the 3 years since the previous season was a good break. I’ve had time...

The monthly Hello Rookie competitions are over for this year. As I haven’t gotten around to covering Hello Rookie month by month, here’s a summary for future reference. Part of the price when winning one of the monthly competitions is to perform on EBS Space 공감. Although the August episode was broadcast on August 20th, until now only clips from the May and June episodes have been uploaded to the official YouTube channel. The playlist below will be updated as more are added.   Once the real show has been broadcast, the official videos from the corresponding Hello Rookie audition is uploaded. The playlist below currently covers May-August:   Now we’re waiting for the final to find out who will win the grand price this year. Those eligible to audition are the bands that have either won or been named wild card during the monthly Hello Rookie competitions.  ...

Mini-Interview with Neon Bunny

Mini-Interview with Neon Bunny

posted on: Aug 19, 2015 | author: Anna

I’ve been following Neon Bunny‘s career with great interest since the very start. Yet I haven’t seen her perform live a single time. That’s about to change in a week and a half as she’s set to perform at Modern Sky Helsinki on August 29th. With more than four years passed since our first interview I figured it was well about time to catch up.   What do you look forward to the most about coming to Modern Sky Helsinki? I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of musicians. I’m also really excited to go to Helsinki.   Do you have any other plans for your time in Europe? I might gonna stop by Norway but not sure of it. And also I want to buy some furniture and wonder if they delivery to Korea, haha   We’ve heard you sing for My-Q, Demicat, Smells, and most recently Spazzkid....

Music Alliance Pact – August 2015

posted on: Aug 15, 2015 | author: Anna

The Music Alliance Pact has returned with another selection of fine music from all over the world. This month sees Floating Island represent South Korea with “Parade”, from the single with the same name released on August 10th. This song is just too catchy and has been what’s playing in my head for the majority of the week. After listening, do also check out the music video for “Stick and Hole” from earlier this year. Read Floating Island’s interview with Korean Indie to learn more about the band.   Click the play button icon to listen to individual songs, right-click on the song title to download an mp3, or grab a zip file of the full 17-track compilation through Dropbox here.   SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK Floating Island – Parade Electronica quartet Floating Island released third single Parade this month. The festive pop number is produced by Floating Island...

Suddenly the kind of summer most people appreciate has returned to Sweden. I’m more into rain and cool weather myself as I get rendered fairly useless even at temperatures in the lower 20s, but there’s all of this awesome music that deserves some attention so I’ll anyway have to at least try to get some things done. Recent Listening The past week I’ve primarily been listening to my Modern Sky Helsinki playlist, trying to pick my favorites ahead of the festival end of this month. So much good music from so many great artists it’s difficult work, but I’ll need to be able to prioritize what to see when I actually get there. Will share it later on. Ggotjam Project‘s soundtrack for LINE’s web drama One Summer Day (좋은 날) showed up on Spotify about a week ago, after being released on July 29th. For quite a few years...
