Mini-Interview with Lang Lee

Two months ago Lang Lee released her second full-length album. It’s a very strong release with great songs, intriguing arrangements, and of course Lang Lee’s characteristic vocals. Billed as her last album, however, it caught fans by surprise. I was as confused as anybody else and figured that the best way to get some clarity was to follow up our 2012 interview with new questions.

Your second album has a rather different tone from your first with all the cello and death. How did it develop?

When I was making demo versions of Playing God, it was not much different from Yon Yonson. I made demos using GarageBand on my MacBook, and I used the source materials in GarageBand to play piano, rhythms, cello, flute etc. And then I sat with my producer Kyoungmo Kim and decided on the concept of the songs and ways to achieve them. Kyoungmo arranged the musicians on the album. (I don’t know many musicians. I’m still an amateur in this way.)

I’ve never worked with live musicians, so I used to think that GarageBand was good enough. But when I witnessed everyone playing, it gave me goosebumps. Live musicians were the best. I said goodbye to virtual instruments then.

Getting rid of guitar sounds was one of the most important aspects of making this second album. I used guitars to write these songs, but I was somewhat tired of guitars. This came quite pertinent especially when I was teaching music to elementary kids. I used to make songs with them just by using voices and harmonies, or tapping on furniture, or clapping. (There were six classes with twenty students each. And not all of them could have guitars.)

For these classes I researched Clapping Music or Body Percussion. I listened to and watched Roomful of Teeth or Steve Reich’s repetitive music and research various sound making methods. In the end, I’m satisfied that the cello and drums sounds are bigger than the guitar sounds. (Low volume guitar sounds were intentional. I say goodbye to guitars too.)

How are the songs and the essays connected?

I am an avid memo taker. My notebook encapsulates all of my brain’s activity. Diaries, comics, doodles, memo, lyrics, scripts are all in there. When I make songs, I hum my diary entries. So my diary entries become songs, songs become essays, essays become comics, scripts become songs… they all circulate.

The fundamental to all that is my brain activity, but the notebook displays those activities visually. I haven’t shown anyone these pages, and I don’t think I will in its entirety, but these pages were crucial to making this second album so, I thought I might as well. We wondered how we would display the lyrics for this album and we decided to show my train of thought. We also thought about scanning the pages but, we typed it all in the end.

How did you come to decide that 신의 놀이 would be your last album? What will you be focusing on next?

That was something that came out of the question, “Would I be able to continue making songs?”. Kyoungmo was also doubting whether he would be able to produce more music. So at one point we both thought that this might be our last album. But it didn’t mean it was the end of Lang Lee’s music. I still write songs and forget chords.

For this album I tried to be as verbal as possible. To sing as if I was speaking. Lyrics with no repetition. I always thought about speaking as a form of art. I wanted to be on stage and make people happy just by telling a story. I wondered about starting rapping or pansori, but Kyoungmo was against pansori because it would change my voice colour. (I still haven’t given up rapping.) These days I am being more realistic about being a stand up comedian. I started writing my stand up script. I would like to show it to everyone soon.

I’m still making films, writing essays, and drawing comics. I also teach on writing music and making film too.

Honestly, it’s really hard.

The New Song Room series of last year appears to have yielded some great new music. Is there any chance there’ll be more of that in any format?

I’m glad I did New Song Room. I learned new ways of writing music. Likewise the eleven musicians I worked with also learned a lot and were very happy. (It was also a good format to lay blame on the other musician if the song was crap!) Also I think it was a great experience for the audience because it allowed them to see how a song was developed in real time.

It’s quite embarrassing to show people how you create. Especially when I was recording vocals. I recorded vocals with my headphones on, and people would listen to my voice with no effects. No background music, no reverbs. They all witness my flaws on melody and rhythm. It was quite embarrassing but I had to see to it till the end because if I didn’t, the session wouldn’t end. After the first session of New Song Room I was so tense that I was feeling ill afterwards. But after having gone through the experience with the other eleven musicians I overcame something inside and now am a more daring person.

New Song Room is a format that I licensed from my friends in Japan. I’d like to do more of these events where I can test my limits as well as providing some viewing pleasure. Whenever I meet with Daham Park, who co-hosted New Song Room, we always ponder:

“What shall we do next?”
“Live broadcasting?”

On September both Lang Lee’s first album Yon Yonson and her sophomore effort will be released in Japan. While Playing God was released as a book with accompanying music download in Korea, the Japanese release will be a CD and book pairing.

The New Song Room series ran from November 2014 through November 2015 and saw Lang Lee write a new song every month together with another musician, in front of a live audience. The full versions of all the songs were released on a compilation from Helicopter Records in June this year.
