Mini-Interview with Danpyunsun and the Sailors

Danpyunsun has been an interesting presence on the Korean underground scene for a few years already. I shared my appreciation for his band Danpyunsun and the Sailors after they were featured on Naver Onstage in April. Using the release of the band’s first album as an excuse I reached out to Danpyunsun to have a few questions answered.

What is the history behind Danpyunsun and the Sailors?

From 2006 until 2013, Danpyunsun was a solo performer named Hoegidong Danpyunsun*. It became the band Danpyunsun and the Sailors and now Danpyunsun gives overall direction to the band. He also sings and plays guitar in this band. After EP Virgin released in 2013, we got stuck into make music that can be categorized as Psychedelic Folk, Freak Folk, and Avantgarde Rock.

The band first gathered for a hilarious reason. Early summer in 2013, Danpyunsun tweeted a rude message to EBS Space Gong-gam*, which read “Hey, Space Gong-gam, I’ll give 3 seconds. CONTACT ME RIGHT NOW.” Maybe it was kind of taking out of his anger because many of his friends already showed up on the show. However, after a few days, EBS space Gong-gam did contact him. Then he thought he could look poor if he came on the stage alone so he asked for help from some people he already knew of but who was not friends before―those are “the sailors” now. Fortunately, every “sailor” was pleased to do it. That’s how we started and now we are here. I think we will move on.

* Hoegidong : ‘Hoegidong’ is a name of location in Seoul
** Space Gong-gam : Space Gong-gam is a famous music show on EBS TV, a public broadcasting in Korea.

As a writer you are known to be witty and somewhat political. How does this translate to your lyrics?

Basically, when I write lyrics I never use material which is related to political issues in reality except in some cases. One of the most important reasons is that the interpretation of a political issue can be changed by the existing state. (To be simple, a leftist yesterday can be a rightist tomorrow.) Therefore, I prefer to express principles which are never changed. Thus, for me, most of music stages are fictional or science-fictional place where things are randomly set and my messages contain some kind of things close to morality plays. Most of the moral lessons I quoted are related to history of human being.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers》의 한국어 버전 주제가*에서 인용해왔다.

Ideas for melodies or lyrics are from my everyday life. Some ideas are started from small realizations in daily life. Other ideas are collected from poems, stories and movies. In most cases, I put some jokes when I reconstruct collected ideas. For example, my song “Hill” looks really serious but the chorus “ground, fire, wind, and mind” is from the Korean version theme song of the American animation Captain Planet and the Planeteers*, which was on Korean TV in early 1990. Moreover, in my song “Purifier”**, I described kids who run after the pest control service car which puffed out smoke in the back as junkies. I think people in my generation will grasp these jokes━a little bit of black humor━in my music easily.

(Additionally, I don’t think I am non-politics because I don’t use political issues directly in my music. I define myself as an activist musician who is under direct action. I am also involved in youth movement against Korean Gentrification. However, I don’t think I should reveal my political act directly in my music. If there is any role that protest song can do, there certainly exist a way that other music–music which don’t say protest messages directly–can participate in protest act. This is one of my convictions.)

* Captain Planet and the Planeteers : Korean version theme song of this animation was very popular among children of those days.

** Purifier : In 1990s Korea, where I grew up, there was a truck smoke out diluted pesticide everywhere to control pest in small areas. Children includes me always ran after the car for fun even though everyone knew it’s not good for health.

What can listeners expect from 동물 Animal?

Although this is not direct answer of this question, I am always aware of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s works. He is a member of Japanese electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) and one of the great musicians by himself. YMO always includes various musical elements in his works such as futurism electronic music in 60-70s, German Krautrock, oriental chords and melodies, traditional rhythm, contemporary music and even something influenced from Fluxus. It is really interesting for me because every element looks harmonious but they also exist as conflicttion and competition aspects in their music. It is great music by itself. Moreover, it can be interpreted as a great documentary of events which happened when Japanese/Asian accepts music from other cultures. This is my personal interpretation, of course, but YMO established their unique identity which is national as well as international.

While we arranged for this album, what all members agreed was that it should be enjoyed like pop music. We didn’t want to make it as music just enjoyed among ourselves. Album Animal must be good music to dance to and enjoy it. On the other hand, it also must present conceptions by sounds. As you know, they are contradictory goals, but we just moved on. To some degree, I think we solved this problem in the end after many compromises.

What I want to ask for listener is that just enjoy it in your first listen. If you like it, focus on each member’s play at the second. You can grasp our intention as far as it goes. That’s all about it.

You covered Shin Joong Hyun/Kim Jungmi for Naver’s Onstage and from what I could see joked around with other covers during shows. If you were to plan a cover album already now, which are the essential songs you’d like to include?

I don’t have any plan to make cover album now and I guess I won’t. We already busy to digest our new music for now. Nevertheless, I will sing cover songs on stage because I love pop music, especially Korean old &new pop and I have been affected variously by them. I don’t want to hide it anyway.

Personally speaking as Danpyunsun, the most song I want to cover is old music of Korean female singers –who are still singing on stage until recently–like Jung Hoon Hee, Park Eun Ohk the folk singer, and Moon Ju Ran the trot singer. I have a huge interest in Korean old music, especially female singer’s songs. The reason is I think woman singer’s songs are more musical than men’s in the majority of cases. Of course it’s my personal bias but I’ve learned many things from female singers as a vocalist. Additionally, I have learned a lot of things from Korean dance music known as K-pop. I also put some cliché of K-pop in some part of the music on Animal, though it is transformed a lot that only I can recognize. However, I don’t think I will cover K-pop though as what I like is make everything in my own style rather than just show up its originality.

Danpyunsun And The Sailors’ first full-length album Animal was released on August 30th. It contains a few titles familiar from the two previous Hoegidong Danpyunsun releases as well as several new titles. Have a listen to “Yellow Room” and check out the video to “Ball” below:
